Hardly anyone looks at the pad first. The saddle gets the attention, the bridle gets the compliments. Yet the pad lies exactly where horse and saddle meet, and so it carries a lot of responsibility.
First the horse, then the pad
Before you fall in love with colours and patterns, take an honest look at your horse: what shape is the back, how much wither is there, how snugly does the saddle fit? A pad can even out small differences, but it does not replace a badly fitting saddle. If in doubt, have a saddle fitter check your saddle.
Thickness and material
Thinner pads, about half an inch, lie close to the horse and suit you when the saddle fits well and you want a lot of contact. One inch of thickness cushions more and spreads pressure more generously. Felt is the classic in western riding because it breathes and absorbs moisture; a neoprene back adds grip and durability. With Matrix you can even put the pad together like a kit: with exchangeable inserts and optional shims.
Size and shape
The pad should stand out a little all around the saddle so nothing presses or lies on it. Look for a cut-out over the wither so air can circulate.
And afterwards?
After riding, brush off sweat and hair, air the pad and let it dry. Then you will enjoy it for a long time. Browse our pads and pick the right one.
