As soon as it gets colder outside, the discussion starts in the barn: to blanket or not to blanket? The honest answer: it depends on the horse.
Does my horse need a blanket?
Horses with a good winter coat that live outside and move freely often manage without a blanket. Clipped horses, older animals or horses that work a lot benefit from one. What matters is that your horse neither freezes nor sweats. Feel under the blanket: if it is warm and dry there, it fits.
Winter blanket
Winter blankets keep warm and protect against wet and wind. Look for fit at the shoulder and wither so nothing rubs.
Cooler
After training it makes sure moisture is carried away from the coat and your horse does not get chilled. It is usually only used for a short time.
