There is this moment in spring: you open the tack locker and the leather looks a bit tired. Dust, maybe a hint of mould, and the rein feels stiffer than you remember. No drama, there are three simple steps.
1. Clean
First remove dirt and sweat residue with a damp, well wrung-out cloth or a saddle soap. Classics like the saddle soap from Fiebing’s are made for exactly this. Do not work soaking wet, the leather should not get drenched.
2. Let it dry
Let the leather dry at room temperature, not on a radiator and not in the blazing sun. Patience pays off, otherwise it turns brittle.
3. Condition
Now comes the grease or balm: better apply a thin coat and work it in than spread it on thick. It soaks in better and the leather stays grippy instead of slippery. Wipe off any excess.
One more tip
While you are at it, look at seams, buckles and strap ends. Anything that frays or rusts is easy to replace now, before it causes trouble on the road. Our care products help you start the season.
