In western riding reins are more than a piece of leather between hand and bit. They decide how you feel when giving aids, and incidentally look good.
Split reins
Two separate reins that are not connected to each other. They are the classic in western sport, for instance in reining. You hold them in one hand and can shorten them one at a time when needed.
Closed reins
The two ends are joined. That gives more safety because nothing can fall on the ground, and is popular with beginners and youths.
Romal and mecate
Romal reins have an attached quirt at the end, the romal. Mecates are round ropes, often made of horsehair. Both are used more by experienced riders.
Material and length
Leather is grippy and becomes supple over time, nylon is easy to care for. Watch the length, it should suit your horse and your riding style. On the Berlin Custom Leather page you will find reins made of solid leather, and all reins are also in the category.
