Heat in the Barn: Tips for Hot Days

Heat in the Barn: Tips for Hot Days

It is one of those days when the air in front of the barn seems to shimmer. Your horse stands with drooping ears, and you wonder what you can do for it.

Water, water, water

Horses drink considerably more in the heat. Make sure fresh water is always available and check the trough several times a day. Salt licks can help support the electrolyte balance.

Shade and air

A shady shelter or an airy barn is the best air conditioning. Plan riding and training for the cool morning or evening hours and give your horse enough time to cool down afterwards.

Cooling down sensibly

Lukewarm to cool water, starting at the legs and then moving step by step higher, feels pleasant. Afterwards scrape off the water so no heat builds up.

Coat and skin

Sun-sensitive spots such as the nose are glad of protection. Coat care counts too: a well detangled mane and tail give flies less to hold on to. If your horse breathes heavily, sweats a lot or seems apathetic in the heat, call the vet immediately. You will find care products in our care section.
