Cinch, Girth, Mohair: How to Find the Right Saddle Cinch

Cinch, Girth, Mohair: How to Find the Right Saddle Cinch

The cinch is one of those parts you only pay attention to when it bothers you. Yet it is the connection between saddle and horse, and therefore quite important.

Material

Mohair cinches are popular in western riding: they are soft, breathable and pleasant on the horse. Nylon billets are robust and easy to clean. Depending on use, for instance in roping, there are also roper cinches with a special cut.

Length

A cinch should be long enough that the buckles ideally sit in the middle of the billet area and you still have a few holes of room. When in doubt, measure instead of guessing.

Fit

The cinch should not press into the elbows. When tightening, move calmly, tighten in stages and check again after a few minutes at a walk.

You will find cinches from Mustang and Matrix in the cinches section. More about Mustang is on the brand page.
