Bits for Beginners: Which Mouthpiece Fits?

Bits for Beginners: Which Mouthpiece Fits?

When you have to buy a bit for the first time, the choice feels like a foreign language course: snaffle, correction, low port, dee ring. Do not worry, the basics are quickly explained.

Snaffle or curb bit?

A snaffle acts directly, without leverage. It is the classic choice for young horses and for riders who work with two hands. Curb bits have shanks at the sides that create leverage through the reins. They belong in experienced hands and with horses trained to a curb.

The mouthpiece

The mouthpiece determines how the bit lies in the mouth. Broken mouthpieces move in the middle, a solid mouthpiece stays rigid. A port, a raised part in the middle, makes room for the tongue. There are many variants, and what fits depends on the mouth, the level of training and the rider’s hand.

Material

Stainless steel is robust and easy to care for, sweet iron oxidises slightly and so has its own taste, copper inlays are meant to stimulate salivation.

Your next step

If in doubt, ask your trainer for an opinion. With Myler the level system helps as well. You will find our bits here.
